Boreal Forests Show Resilience, States Sue Trump Admin Over Solar & US Blocks Emissions Deal

Mosquitoes have been discovered in Iceland for the first time, leaving Antarctica as the only continent without them. Three specimens of Culiseta annulata—a cold-resistant species—were found in October by a citizen scientist using wine traps designed to attract moths.

Scientists had long predicted mosquitoes could colonize Iceland due to abundant breeding habitats like marshes and ponds, but the harsh climate previously prevented establishment. The Arctic is now warming four times faster than the global average, and Iceland has experienced record heat, collapsing glaciers, and southern fish species appearing in its waters.

Globally, warming temperatures are expanding mosquito ranges. The UK recently found eggs of Egyptian mosquitoes and Asian tiger mosquitoes—invasive species that can spread tropical diseases like dengue, chikungunya, and Zika.

The Icelandic species can survive by sheltering in basements and barns during winter, suggesting they may successfully establish a permanent population in the warming climate.

European Union leaders agreed on measures to support industries during the green transition, paving the way for ambitious 2040 climate targets. The deal includes aid for automakers and energy-intensive sectors while promising to reduce regulatory burdens on the path to climate neutrality by 2050.

The agreement increases chances that climate ministers will approve a goal to cut net emissions by 2040 at their November 4 meeting, ahead of the COP30 climate summit in Brazil. However, the deal offers only short-term relief—member states must still negotiate with the European Parliament on final targets and subsequent implementing laws.

The breakthrough follows months of disputes between countries over climate ambition versus industrial needs. The European Commission plans to modify its 2035 combustion engine ban as the automotive sector struggles against Chinese competition in electric vehicles.

Countries presented various demands—trade protections, regulatory flexibility, and changes to a controversial carbon market for heating and transport—before reaching Thursday's agreement.

A French court ruled Thursday that TotalEnergies engaged in "misleading commercial practices" regarding its environmental commitments, marking the first application of France's greenwashing laws to a fossil fuel company.

The Paris civil court ordered TotalEnergies to remove website claims about reaching carbon neutrality by 2050 and being a major player in energy transition. The company has one month to comply or face €10,000 daily fines, and must post the ruling on its website with the same penalty for noncompliance. It must also pay €8,000 to each of three NGOs and €15,000 in legal costs.

The case, brought by Greenpeace France, Friends of the Earth France, and Notre Affaire à Tous in 2022, follows TotalEnergies' name change from Total. The court also ordered removal of statements claiming the company places sustainable development at its strategy's heart.

TotalEnergies, which recently announced plans to increase gas production, acknowledged the judgment while noting most claims were dismissed.

The Trump administration finalized plans last week to open Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge coastal plain to oil and gas drilling, fulfilling campaign pledges. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced the decision affecting 1.5 million acres, with Trump's legislation requiring at least four lease sales over 10 years.

The area is considered sacred by Indigenous Gwich'in people who depend on caribou herds there and oppose drilling. However, leaders from Kaktovik, an Iñupiaq community within the refuge, support development for economic reasons.

The administration also completed a land exchange to build a road through Izembek National Wildlife Refuge connecting King Cove to Cold Bay's airport—seen as vital for emergency medical access. The deal exchanges 500 acres of refuge wilderness for up to 1,739 acres outside it.

Conservation groups promised legal challenges, citing threats to internationally recognized migratory bird habitat and subsistence communities. A previous Biden administration lease sale attracted no bidders, while restored Trump-era leases face ongoing litigation.

UK ministers are considering abandoning their pledge to remove nearly all fossil fuels from electricity supply by 2030 if achieving it proves significantly more expensive than gas power, government sources revealed.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer may miss his own target to keep energy bills down, with concern growing in Downing Street that cost-of-living pressures are fueling Reform UK's rise in polls. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband faces a crucial decision on renewable commissioning within weeks.

Experts say hitting the 2030 target requires commissioning a record 8 gigawatts of new generation, but high interest rates and scale may push costs beyond gas alternatives. While some officials want Starmer to publicly drop the target, he prefers quietly missing it rather than openly abandoning the centerpiece of his climate mission.

Critics warn this risks undermining business confidence in Britain's renewable sector. The Tony Blair Institute recommends dropping the 2030 target while maintaining longer-term net-zero commitments, though environmental groups call any retreat a "complete dereliction of duty."
