Higher Gas, New Energy Bill & An Another Planetary Boundary Crossed

Coal miners are protesting the Trump administration's enforcement pause on silica dust limits designed to prevent black lung disease, in spite of the administration's public positioning on coal. While President Trump has promoted the coal industry since 2016—campaigning with miners, providing $625 million in subsidies to coal plants, and using miners as backdrops at White House events—dozens of miners protested outside the Labor Department on Tuesday against a rule change designed to save lives. The silica dust regulation, estimated to prevent over 1,000 deaths, was delayed after mining industry groups sued citing costs. The Trump administration declined to defend the rule in court and agreed to pause enforcement. Black lung disease has resurged in recent years, affecting up to 20 percent of veteran miners in Appalachia, with cases now appearing in workers in their 30s and 40s. A White House spokeswoman stated Trump "cares deeply" about coal miners and "has their back," while miners like retired worker Gary Hairston counter: "The companies might be getting a handout, but the miners ain't getting none."
The European Parliament's legal committee voted Monday to significantly weaken the EU's corporate sustainability due diligence directive, which requires companies to address human rights and environmental issues in their supply chains or face fines up to 5% of global turnover. The approved changes would raise the threshold from companies with 1,000 employees and 450 million euros turnover to those with 5,000 employees and 1.5 billion euros turnover. The committee also voted to eliminate requirements for corporate transition plans. Proponents argue the changes will reduce costs and increase predictability for businesses amid concerns about European competitiveness, with some companies like TotalEnergies calling for complete repeal. Countries including the United States and Qatar have objected to the law's extraterritorial reach. However, investors and environmental advocates contend the rollback undermines corporate accountability and Europe's climate investment goals. EU member states have already expressed support for the higher employee threshold.
A new report by 160 international researchers warns Earth has crossed its first climate tipping point: warm-water coral reefs, including the Great Barrier Reef, have entered irreversible decline. Nearly one billion people and a quarter of marine life depend on these ecosystems for food, livelihood, and coastal storm protection. The University of Exeter-led Global Tipping Points Report identifies additional critical thresholds approaching sooner than previously estimated. The Amazon rainforest could deteriorate at 1.5°C warming above pre-industrial levels, lower than prior projections. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, which acts as Earth's central heating system, risks collapse below 2°C warming, potentially causing severe winters in western Europe resembling a small ice age and threatening global food security. Twenty years ago, scientists believed tipping points required four to five degrees of warming; now they occur between one to two degrees.
Republican lawmakers are lobbying Energy Secretary Chris Wright to restore funding for green energy projects in their states after the Trump administration announced nearly $8 billion in grant cancellations. Additional cuts under review include $4.2 million for North Dakota's Project Tundra carbon capture retrofit and West Virginia's ARCH2 hydrogen hub. Senator Kevin Cramer confirmed his state's funding appears on a cancellation list and is working to restore it, while Senator Shelley Moore Capito said DOE indicated the list is preliminary with no final decisions made. The initial $8 billion in cuts, which the Office of Management and Budget touted as affecting blue states, also impacts Republican districts. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senators Bill Cassidy and John Cornyn said they were unaware their states could lose $1 billion for carbon capture projects. Democrats claim the administration is using the government shutdown as justification for previously desired cuts, though Wright stated the grant cancellations were unrelated to the shutdown.
Economist Nicholas Stern argues that climate investment represents the 21st century's primary growth opportunity, while fossil fuel-based growth is self-destructive. Clean technology costs have plummeted—solar power and batteries down 80% in a decade, offshore wind down 73%, onshore wind down 57%—making renewable energy cheaper than fossil fuels across most regions. Stern contends these investments can simultaneously address climate crisis, boost economic growth, and lift millions from poverty through healthier, more productive societies. Fossil fuel air pollution kills millions annually, while cleaner cities enhance productivity. His 2006 landmark review concluding climate action costs less than inaction remains valid but has intensified, as global heating effects arrive faster and more severely than anticipated. Tipping points previously associated with 4°C warming now appear possible at 2°C. The UK's net zero sector is growing three times faster than the overall economy, with the Office for Budget Responsibility finding that achieving net zero is far cheaper than previously forecast due to declining renewable energy costs.
