This Week In Climate

Climate Funding Record, Fake Snow at Winter Olympics, and more

Global energy transition investment reached a record $2.3 trillion in 2025, up 8% in spite of political and economic headwinds around the world. Renewable energy and power grids attracted $1.2 trillion in investment, driven primarily by data center electricity demands, while electrified transportation received $893 billion, led by Asia and Europe.

The Asia Pacific region accounted for nearly half of global spending, with the EU investing $455 billion (up 18%). US investment grew more slowly at $378 billion amid reduced government support under President Trump.

However, warning signs emerged: China's regulatory changes caused a 9.5% drop in renewable energy investment, and hydrogen and nuclear funding declined. The 8% growth marked the slowest pace since 2019—far below the $5.2 trillion annually needed through 2030 to achieve net zero emissions and prevent severe climate impacts.

Fully electric vehicles outsold petrol-only cars in the EU for the first time in December 2025, capturing 22.6% of registrations versus 22.5% for petrol vehicles, according to ACEA data. However, hybrids remained dominant with 44% market share.

Analysts note the shift partly reflects petrol cars being reclassified as "mild hybrids" rather than genuine EV adoption. Experts predict it will take roughly five years before pure EVs truly overtake combustion engines region-wide.

Chinese brands like BYD are intensifying competition against established manufacturers like Volkswagen and BMW. Tesla registrations fell 20.2% in December.

Despite the EU abandoning its effective 2035 combustion engine ban due to industry pressure, experts expect continued EV growth through new affordable models and government incentives. Overall European car sales rose 7.6% in December, reaching their highest levels in five years, though still below pre-pandemic figures.

A groundbreaking hydropower pumped-storage facility in the UK has begun generating electricity using a novel underground system that works on gentle slopes rather than requiring steep dams or mountains.

RheEnergise's technology uses a mineral-rich fluid over 2.5 times denser than water, enabling the same power generation from slopes less than half the height of traditional systems. The pilot project successfully produces 500 kilowatts—enough for 400 UK homes annually.

The company is negotiating commercial-scale projects in the UK, Italy, Poland, Spain, and North America within three years, with larger developments planned for the 2030s. This long-duration energy storage system stores excess renewable energy during abundant supply periods and releases it when demand peaks.

The UK government has allocated over £69 million for such storage technologies, which could reduce net-zero costs by managing wind and solar variability, minimizing fossil fuel backup needs, and preventing grid overload from excess renewable generation.

Snowmaking teams are racing to prepare the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics as climate change narrows the windows for artificial snow production. Italian Alpine venues have expanded infrastructure—adding reservoirs, pumps, and snow guns—to compensate for declining natural snowfall.

Over 600,000 cubic meters of snow have been produced in Livigno alone since mid-December, rushed through during brief cold spells. Preparation time for priority slopes has dropped from 150 hours decades ago to just 50 hours today through technological advances, with 25% more snow produced using the same energy as 10 to 15 years ago.

However, scientists warn technology cannot overcome physical limits: snowmaking requires freezing temperatures, which are increasingly scarce. While snowmaking accounts for only 2-4% of resort carbon emissions (versus 50-80% from transportation), researchers caution that with 4°C warming, 98% of European ski resorts face low snow supply threats—a challenge technology alone cannot solve indefinitely.

The US has officially exited the Paris climate agreement for the second time under President Trump, becoming the only country to withdraw and joining Iran, Libya, and Yemen as non-participants. The administration has also announced withdrawal from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, representing a complete retreat from climate governance.

While global clean energy investment continues—with renewables comprising over 90% of new power capacity in 2025—experts warn US withdrawal could slow momentum. China now dominates clean energy manufacturing (80% of solar panels, 70% of wind turbines) and its emissions may have peaked, but US abdication could justify lower ambition elsewhere.

Trump's policies risk marginalizing the US while accelerating fossil fuel expansion that will impact global emissions targets. The withdrawal also eliminates US climate finance for developing nations and reinforces perceptions of American unreliability, occurring as the planet experiences record heat and mounting climate-related disasters.
