This Week In Climate:

In today's edition of This Week in Climate, we saw Saudi Arabia, Russia, India and China push the IPCC to delay its next landmark climate report to 2029 — a year past the COP33 review it was built for, the Trump administration reopen its legal fight against Rhode Island’s 95%-complete Revolution Wind farm, and lawyers from Japan to France turn the world court’s landmark climate ruling into lawsuits against governments and corporations.

Climate Weeks Happening Now:

From Atlanta to Barcelona, the Climate Week Network is in full swing, with Atlanta Climate Week wrapping up, Barcelona Climate Week at its midpoint, and Munich Climate Week kicking off next week — read on to see how you can still get involved below.

Meet Climate-Trained Talent at Employer Office Hours

Cohort 10 of the Climatebase Fellowship (featured in Forbes) is underway, with 500+ Fellows joining an alumni community of 4,500+. Only a few Employer Office Hours sessions remain this cohort, open to organizations hiring now.

Employer Office Hours is a curated event series connecting select employers directly with climate-trained, job-seeking Fellows: employers give a short presentation on their open roles, join live Q&A, and receive a shortlist of interested candidates.

Fellows are mid-career professionals averaging 6–10 years of experience across engineering, policy, data, comms, and more. Over 250 organizations have hired a Climatebase Fellow across the program's first six cohorts, often more than one.

If you'd like to connect with Climatebase Fellows before the cohort's final sessions, express your interest below:

IPCC Roadblocks, Trump’s Attack on Wind, and More

Saudi Arabia, Russia, India, China, and other countries are pressing the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to delay its seventh assessment report (AR7) from 2028 to 2029. Meeting this week in Addis Ababa, the IPCC faces the dispute over a report originally timed for the Cop33 climate summit, where governments’ progress on Paris agreement goals is to be reviewed. Backers of the delay say developing countries need more input, since climate science has long been dominated by the EU, UK, and US.

Poor and vulnerable nations, including 34 High Ambition Coalition members, the EU, and the Least Developed Countries group, oppose postponement, warning that political interests shouldn’t determine which science gets heard. Global temperatures have already passed 1.5C, and current pledges would lead to over 1.8C even if fully met. AR7 is expected to be even more urgent than the last assessment, which warned of catastrophic, irreversible impacts without swift emissions cuts.

The Trump administration’s Justice Department has asked a federal court to send back Interior’s approval of the construction and operations plan for Orsted’s Revolution Wind farm off Rhode Island, which began producing power in March. Interior says it wants to re-evaluate compliance with the federal law governing offshore energy development.

The move threatens a bipartisan permitting deal reached in September, which was meant to stop the administration from blocking fully permitted wind and solar projects. Trump has fought offshore wind with stop-work orders, lease suspensions, permit revocations, and $4 billion in buyout settlements.

Democratic Senators Whitehouse and Heinrich said the filing shows the need for permitting certainty in law. Administration officials insist they still support the deal and that the case stems from a lawsuit against the Biden administration. Analysts and advocates warn it adds uncertainty to a project that is over 95% complete.

A new study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences analyzed 20,736 publications on 14 climate tipping elements from 2000 to 2025 and found research attention is highly uneven. The Greenland Ice Sheet accounts for 20% of papers, while abrupt boreal permafrost thaw appears in just 0.7% and the North Atlantic subpolar gyre in 3.1%.

Notably, systems with lower estimated warming thresholds, meaning those expected to tip sooner, don’t systematically receive more research. Permafrost thaw and Greenland both have estimated thresholds near 1.5°C, yet their publication counts differ enormously.

Only 8.1% of papers explicitly examined tipping dynamics such as abruptness, self-perpetuation, or irreversibility. The authors caution that publication counts measure attention, not scientific certainty, and don’t suggest redirecting existing research. They recommend identifying and filling gaps for under-studied, potentially consequential risks.

A landmark International Court of Justice (ICJ) climate ruling is being turned into a practical legal toolkit through lawsuits worldwide, combining health science, international law, and grassroots mobilisation to force governments and corporations to act.

In Japan, lawyer Akihiro Shima and 400 colleagues represent over 900 citizens arguing that the government’s 2050 net-zero plan fails the ICJ’s “due diligence” standard and leaves older people and outdoor workers exposed. The first hearing is set for October 2026. In France, a Paris court ruled in June that TotalEnergies must account for indirect emissions from end users under its corporate duty of care. Similar cases, from Canada to Costa Rica, target heat adaptation plans, workplace protections, and health system resilience.

The toolkit rests on the ICJ’s July 2025 advisory opinion, the result of a campaign begun in 2019 by twenty-seven Pacific island law students. The court affirmed that a healthy environment is a fundamental human right and that states must prevent harm, cooperate across borders, raise ambition, and provide reparations for historical emissions. The UN General Assembly endorsed it in May 2026 by 141 votes to eight.

Health evidence is central: the 2025 Lancet Countdown report found heat-related deaths have risen 23% since the 1990s, to 546,000 a year.

A new peer-reviewed study in Environmental Research Letters finds that gas- and propane-fired commercial kitchens generate dangerous levels of heat and air pollution despite commercial ventilation, while all-electric kitchens do not. The authors believe it is the first U.S. study to quantify the difference.

Researchers from PSE Healthy Energy, Stanford, and NYU measured conditions in 27 kitchens in California, New York, and Pennsylvania, only three of them all-electric. Most fossil-fueled kitchens exceeded 90°F, above OSHA’s stalled proposed 80°F high-heat threshold. Seventy percent exceeded EPA and WHO safety limits for nitrogen dioxide, which inflames the lungs and raises asthma risk, while electric kitchens never exceeded a tenth of the WHO limit. About a third of fossil-fueled kitchens also breached NO2 standards after hours, apparently because of pilot lights, raising concern about emissions drifting into apartments above restaurants. Carbon monoxide and benzene occasionally hit unsafe levels too, but stayed within guidelines in electric kitchens.

The findings matter for about 15.7 million U.S. food service workers, and over three-quarters of restaurants burn gas. California leads in policies encouraging electrification, including electric-ready requirements and utility rebates. Co-author and chef Christopher Galarza hopes the results persuade the executives who fund these kitchens.
